DAMP
Taking out the guess work!
Stay Dry, Stay Happy: Essential Tips to Prevent Damp in Your Caravan!
Your caravan is your ticket to adventure, your home away from home. But nothing puts a damper on a great trip like the telltale signs of damp. The musty smell, the peeling wallpaper, the unsightly spots – it's every caravan owner's dread.
The good news? Preventing damp is much easier (and cheaper!) than dealing with the aftermath. Here at KND Caravans, we've helped countless caravanners keep their rigs dry and their travels trouble-free.
Here are our top tips to keep your caravan damp-free and your adventures on track:
1. Ventilation is King!
This is the golden rule of caravan care. Good airflow is your best defence against moisture.
Open Those Windows! Whenever you're in the caravan, especially while cooking or showering, open windows and roof vents to let steam and humidity escape. Even on colder days, crack open a vent for a little airflow.
Open the Doors When Not in Use: When your caravan is parked, if it's safe and secure to do so, leave doors and lockers ajar to encourage air circulation.
Don't Forget the Nose Vents: Most caravans have built-in ventilation vents. Make sure they aren't blocked by furniture, luggage, or curtains.
2. Seal the Deal: Regular Inspections are a Must
The exterior of your caravan is its first line of defence. Any break in its armor is an invitation for water to seep in.
Check the Roof! Inspect all roof seams, vents, roof lights, and the area around the TV aerial. These are prime spots for leaks. Look for cracks, degradation, or loose sealant.
Inspect the Walls and Windows: Walk around your caravan and carefully examine all window seals, door seals, and bodywork joints. Check for any damage, perishing rubber, or gaps.
Pay Attention to the Corners and Floor: The corners of your caravan, especially the lower ones, and the area around the floor-to-wall joints are also vulnerable.
3. Address Leaks Immediately
If you do find a potential entry point for water, don't ignore it! A small leak today can lead to a big problem tomorrow.
Seal it Up! Re-seal any suspect areas with the appropriate caravan sealant. We can advise you on the best products for the job.
Don't Wait! Damp can cause significant damage very quickly. Taking prompt action is crucial.
4. Fight the Humidity Within
What you do inside the caravan matters just as much as what happens outside.
Ventilate When Cooking and Showering: As mentioned above, use ventilation. If your caravan has an extractor fan, use it!
Wipe Down Surfaces: After showering or cooking, wipe down damp surfaces like shower walls, bathroom tiles, and even kitchen countertops.
Consider a Dehumidifier or Moisture Trap: For periods of storage or when you know humidity levels are high, using a small, portable dehumidifier or moisture traps can help to collect excess moisture in the air. Remember to empty them regularly!
Don't Dry Clothes Inside: While convenient, drying wet clothes indoors releases a huge amount of moisture into the air. If you must, use a tumble dryer (if available) or wait for a dry day to hang them outside.
5. Smart Storage Practices
How you store your caravan, especially over the winter, plays a significant role in damp prevention.
Remove Upholstery and Bedding: Soft furnishings act like giant sponges. Removing them for storage prevents them from absorbing any residual moisture. If you must leave them, try standing cushions on their ends to improve air circulation.
Open All Internal Doors and Lockers: This helps to promote airflow throughout the caravan interior.
Keep the Exterior Clean: Dirt and algae on the roof and bodywork can hold moisture and potentially damage the sealant.
6. The Professional Touch: Annual Damp Checks
Even with all your best efforts, sometimes a professional eye can spot things you might miss. An annual damp check performed by a qualified engineer can provide peace of mind and catch potential issues early.
